Nas‘ Illmatic celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and to commemorate the legacy of the seminal work, a documentary on the record is set to release as part of this month’s Tribeca Film Festival.
In addition to issuing a re-release of the album as Illmatic XX with plenty of bonus cuts, he’s completed a documentary which shows his creative process.
the film explores the origins and impact of a hip-hop album that was groundbreaking in terms of both style and content, as well as its lofty ambitions. “When I made Illmatic, I was trying to make the perfect album,” explains Nas in the documentary’s trailer. “I was trying to make you experience my life. I wanted you to look at hip-hop differently. I wanted you to feel that hip-hop was changing and becoming something more real.” Time Is Illmatic will premiere on April 16 at New York City’s Beacon Theater.
Illmatic XX arrives on Tuesday and can be pre-order on iTunes (to say im looking forward to this is just a bit of an understatement.)
